What is a Sweat Lodge

Home

A sweat lodge is a way of cleansing the spirit, mind and
body of toxins. It can be useful in connecting to the four
elements (earth, air, fire and water) as well as renewing
our connection with our mother the Earth.

The traditional Canadian sweat lodge ceremony consists
of 8 or more 'rounds'. A round is as follows:
Participants sit in a circle inside the lodge (a covered willow
framed dome shaped construction). In the centre is small pit
where herbs and rocks heated by a fire outside are placed.
The eastern facing entrance is then closed blocking all
outside light to those inside. Water is sprinkled on the
hot rocks creating an aromatic steam atmosphere.
Songs, drumming or prayers now take place.
The door is opened again and new rocks brought in for
the next round.
